Hamburg and coffee. It’s an interesting relationship that many people don’t know much about. But the truth is that the port of Hamburg is Europe’s number one destination for coffee shipments from all over the world and most of the coffees we enjoy every day will have passed through here at some point in their journey. In 2012, Germany alone imported 614 000 tonnes of coffee alone!
Still, when it comes to specialty coffee, Hamburg still lags behind other cities somewhat, but something truly great is brewing in Germany’s north and this guide will take you to all the places you need to visit. Researched and written by The Coffeevine’s co-founder Alex Kitain, who is a true Hamburger through and through.
Stockholm Espresso Club
Located in a quiet residential street in Winterhude, this fine specialty coffee shop serves only Koppi Roasters from Sweden and specialise in spectacular coffees that are both elegantly and expertly prepared. Also great for breakfasts.

Outside
Elbgold Roastery
Although word of mouth suggests Elbgold’s coffees are somewhat inconsistent across its three outlets, the roastery is still a spectacular space that is probably the closest you’ll get to some of the most spectacular roasteries in San Francisco. It’s also the only place in Hamburg to host a Slayer espresso machine, although its not often used (inexplicably so).

Giant windows and lots of light
Public Coffee Roasters
The only specialty coffee bar in the city’s Neustadt neighbourhood, Public Coffee Roasters is a small but friendly spot that is also one of the main outlets of Coffee Table Mags, the company run by Third Wave Wichteln co-founder Tho Keller. Public currently serves three espresso blends, a bunch of single origin filter roasts, and every last Friday of the month, there’s a cupping of coffees from different Germany roasters.

The tasteful interior
Less Political
When Mika Neu and Filine Manthey opened Less Political in 2012, it was a real experiment and no one know if it had any future. Four years on, Less Political is going stronger than ever and has become a real haven for any coffee aficionado who wants to savour the latest offerings from the likes of Berlin’s Bonanza Coffee. A truly welcome retreat in a Latte Macchiato infested neighbourhood.

The cozy inside
Playground Coffee
The latest incarnation of local coffee hero Veljko Tatalovic, Playground Coffee first started out as a small ‘shop-in-shop’ inside Otto Burger in Hamburg’s popular university district. Its coffees have by far the most spectacular packaging of any roaster out there and Veljko and his team are currently working on a few really cool new projects, including a small coffee kiosk in the S-Bahn Station at the Rathaus and their own full-fledged coffee roastery in the city.

Vejlko and Marc
Nord Coast Coffee Roasters
Certainly one of the most elaborate coffee shops and roasteries in town, Nord Coast occupies a former travel agency in close to the city’s beautiful Speicherstadt and harbour. Decidedly geared at both more refined and traditional palates, Nord Coast roast their coffees to suit customers from all kinds of backgrounds.

The gorgeous bar
Tornqvist Coffee
Last but certainly not least, this pop up coffee bar in St. Pauli is the brainchild of extravagant coffee professional Linus Köster, and it enjoys a true cult following amongst the city’s coffee nerds. What started as a coffee truck (currently parked in a garage) and then mutated into a winter pop up, will open inside a permanent location this summer, significantly raising the bar a lot higher.
